Floating cabinets

A closet anchored to the wall that doesn’t touch the floor: the unit is suspended, leaving the floor unobstructed beneath it. This creates a twofold effect: the room appears larger because more of the floor is visible, and cleaning is easier because the vacuum cleaner can pass underneath without any obstacles. Whatever its mounting can support: the key isn't the cabinet itself, but the mounting. When mounted on brick or concrete with the proper anchors, a properly installed floating cabinet can support its full design load. On drywall, locate the studs or use load-bearing fasteners, and distribute the weight evenly rather than concentrating it in one spot.

Like all oak furniture, wipe it down with a cloth and oil it once a year, plus a specific check: once a year, make sure the anchoring is still secure, with no play or wobbling when opening the doors. The underside of the cabinet—invisible but exposed—benefits from a quick wipe with a cloth during each general cleaning.

In small bedrooms and entryways, where the visible floor space is maximized; and at mid-height in hallways, where a piece of furniture with legs would get in the way. In the entryway, combined with a low, solid-wood shoe cabinet, it creates a two-level entryway with a completely unobstructed path.
