What exactly is a console, and what is it used for?

A narrow, tall sideboard designed to be placed against the wall in high-traffic areas: 25 to 35 cm deep, 75 to 85 cm tall, and as wide as the wall allows. In the entryway, it serves as an entryway station for keys, mail, and gloves; in hallways and living rooms, it provides a decorative surface where a standard piece of furniture wouldn’t fit.
