Frequently Asked Questions About Solid Wood Sideboards

What exactly is a sideboard, and what is it used for?

A sideboard is a low storage piece of furniture for the dining room: it features doors and drawers at mid-height, with a top surface that serves as a display area and decorative element. It holds dishes, glassware, linens, and all tableware, keeping them close to where they’re used. Made of solid wood, it’s also one of the pieces that adds the most character to a room. We explain in detail what a sideboard is and what it’s used for.

What are the standard dimensions for a dining room sideboard?

Standard sizes range from 150 to 200 cm wide, 75 to 85 cm tall, and 40 to 45 cm deep. To choose the right one, measure the available wall space and leave enough room to walk by: with the table nearby, you’ll need about 90 cm between the sideboard and the occupied chairs to move around with trays.

How do you care for a solid oak sideboard?

Use a damp, wrung-out cloth to dust it and apply natural oil once or twice a year, paying special attention to the top surface, which gets the most use. The handles and edges of the doors will benefit from an extra coat of oil. Air out the interior from time to time and don’t place it right next to radiators—the wood will thank you for it.

Where should the sideboard be placed in relation to the table?

On the wall closest to the serving area, ideally parallel to the solid wood dining table: this way, it serves as a support station when serving, and the distance between the table and the tableware is minimal. If the table and sideboard are both made of oak, the dining room gains an immediate sense of unity. We work exclusively with FSC-certified solid oak manufactured in Europe.

What should I put on top of the sideboard?

The surface of the sideboard is the dining room’s showpiece: a lamp, a touch of greenery, and a few carefully chosen pieces work better than clutter. A mirror above it amplifies the light and makes the room feel larger: wooden mirrors with oak frames maintain material consistency and double the sense of spaciousness.
