Frequently Asked Questions About Solid Wood Dressers
What is a dresser, and what does it hold best?
A dresser is a piece of bedroom furniture with drawers: three or four tiers of mid-height storage, with a top surface. It’s unbeatable for storing folded items—T-shirts, sweaters, underwear, and pajamas—which tend to get messy in the closet but stay neatly organized by drawer here. Made of solid oak, it’s also one of the most durable pieces in the home. We work exclusively with FSC-certified solid oak manufactured in Europe.
What are the dimensions of a standard dresser?
Standard dimensions: 80 to 120 cm wide, 75 to 90 cm tall, and 40 to 45 cm deep. A three-drawer chest holds one person’s folded clothes; a four-drawer chest holds two people’s, provided they’re organized. Leave about 90 cm of space in front of the chest so you can open the drawers and move around comfortably. We outline the criteria in our guide to choosing the perfect chest of drawers.
How do you care for a solid oak dresser?
A damp, wrung-out cloth, a little natural oil once or twice a year, and a quick check of the drawer runners: if they’re made of wood, an occasional coat of natural wax will keep them sliding smoothly. Don’t overload the top drawers with excessive weight, and the dresser will literally last for generations.
Where should I put the dresser in the bedroom?
On the wall opposite or next to the bed, always leaving at least 60 cm of clearance on either side. The classic combination works well: a dresser in front of the solid wood bed, made of the same oak, creating a dialogue between materials that visually organizes the bedroom.
What should I put on top of the dresser?
Practical and not much else: a tray for emptying pockets, a lamp if the lighting calls for it, and a mirror above that turns the dresser into a makeshift vanity. The wooden mirrors with oak frames are the classic finishing touch: they reflect the light and enhance the feeling of spaciousness in the bedroom.
